The last 3 years have seen UWE Women’s Basketball go from oblivion – losing every game for two seasons to being undefeated league champions, varsity winners and have seen their squad almost double in numbers. The Women’s 1st team completed their first season in the Western 1A last year and certainly proved that’s where they belong, with a comfortable mid-table position, and some big results showing the potential of the side.
Women’s 1st Team Captain Annette Cook won our Eleanor Rose Ellis Scholarship last year which is presented to a UWE student who has demonstrated that they have made a significant contribution to a student sport.
Annette’s coach Paul Mundy had this to say about her:
This is my second year working with Annette as coach of the Uwe women basketball team. When i first saw her in trials and how she gave everything in those first few drills i knew she was different. Her passion for the sport was clearly evident and she went straight into the starting line up in a team that had come runners up and earned promotion the previous season. She worked tirelessly in training to improve her skills and develop as a player which made invaluable for the season. Even when she had sprained her ankle she would still attend training sessions and support the team and help out with coaching the sessions. She was a key part in the team’s success that year and the team won the league and got promoted for a second time running to the Western 1A. She is a very determined and will never give up and these qualities were essential when in tough games we have to grind out results as a team. She will alway be the one diving on the floor for loose balls and taking offensive fouls, putting her body on the line for the team.
Annette is a fantastic example of a UWE student committed to her sport, who leads the team with passion and desire both individually and also for the team.
Aside from the clubs performance on the court, they are extremely active in their social events. The club like to think of themselves as a family and host an annual ‘All-Star’ type event half way through the season during which club members compete against each other in 3pt shoot-outs, dunk contests and skills challenges. They have been nominated for Best Sports Club two years running at our UWE Sports Ball.
UWE Women’s Basketball train every Tuesday at the Centre for Sport – 18:30 – 20:30.
