300+ Students, 14 Motions, 1 Showcase Evening of Student Voice & Representation.
The University of the West of England Students' Union's Annual General Meeting 2011 concluded successfully on 24th of November 2011. The event was attended by 315 students from across all the UWE campuses. Colin Offler, the SU President welcomed students to the meeting. Olly Reid, the VP Education read out a statement concerning the elected Chair of Meetings and invited any student members to elect a chair, for this meeting, from the floor. Will Harris was elected to chair this meeting.
The AGM was presented with a procedural motion to change the order of the agenda and move the motions to the first item of the meeting, after a show of cards in favour, the chair then proceeded to invite the first speaker to the stage. The union was presented with 14 motions out of which 13 were carried, some with amendments, and 1 not voted upon.
The carried motions included: Student Support Services on MyUWE, Accessibility to Information, Commitment to Sustainable Palm Oil Products, Maintain the Integrity of Student Media, Balfour Beatty, Implementation of Mental Health Awareness Training for UWE Staff, Umbrella Campus Integration, Glenside Student Centre, To Improve Research Students’ Experience, PGCE Bursaries, Hartpury College, Support Staff and Students in Industrial Disputes, Trade Union Disputes.
There was no vote taken on the motion regarding Safe Space Policy.
After the motions had been presented, a number of members left the meeting.
The AGM was presented with another procedural motion to change the order of the agenda to receive next the report from the Trustees of the Union. After a member called to check the quoracy of the meeting a count of the students still present was taken, the meeting was not found to be quorate and the remaining items on the agenda requiring a vote have been deferred to the next meeting.
The Students’ Union Executive continued to deliver their reports to the remaining students and received questions on their work so far in their respective terms of office.
Election results for the NUS Annual Conference Delegates Elections were announced later in the evening where all the running candidates were declared qualified to be the part of UWESU delegation which will be headed by SU President, Colin Offler.
