On route to France, the SS Mendi was accidentally sunken off the coast of Isle of Wight when it was hit by a meat transporter the SS Darro. Controversially the captain of the Darro made little attempt was made to save their lives. The wreck of the Mendi and all its contents still lay under the waters. This work will include; underwater and near-water portraits of African heritage former soldiers, coastal and water landscapes of the Isle of Wight, audio fragments of interviews and conversation about this event in history, and a specially commissioned poem, creating an audio/visual work which resonates on this history from multiple viewpoints.
