The Students' Union's Vp Community and Welfare is organising a film competition in collaboration with the Climate Education Module team at UWE Bristol to create a fun and engaging experience where students can learn more about climate action, network and meet others as well as getting creative and winning prizes to do so!
Competition Concept
A yearly, university-wide short film competition centered on climate change and action, designed to creatively engage students across all campuses with environmental themes in a collaborative, educational, and impactful way.
Criteria for a good film
The objective of the 5-15 min (max) film is to highlight your perspective on climate change and what constitutes a useful ‘climate action’. It can be a small- scale or a large-scale action but the film needs to illustrate why, in your view, it is relevant and useful, and for whom. In addition to educating the audience, the film needs to inspire it. You are not required to be professional film makers, nor somebody who is specialized in making educational documentaries. What we hope you can produce is a short, straight to the point, effective film that gives you the chance to talk about these issues in your own creative way, with your student voice.
Core Values
This initiative aligns with both the Student Union's goals and UWE's commitment to sustainability and creative engagement, with potential for meaningful impact on climate education and student participation.
Competition Structure
Team formation: Students will form cross-disciplinary teams to create short films on climate-related topics, encouraging collaboration between departments. The team should be no less than 2 and no more than 5 people.
Inclusive participation: Open to students from all departments and campuses, not just those studying filmmaking, to ensure diverse perspectives and maximum engagement. The idea is to provide different perspectives and a multidisciplinary approach to climate change and action.
Educational component: Each participant must complete the UWE Climate Education Course as a mandatory requirement and submit the certificate of completion to participate, making the initiative both creative and educational. Whilst the certificate of completion is provided for having done all the quizzes – the making of the film is a ‘climate action’ (final assessment) in itself and, through the making of the film, you will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement (a plus for your CV!).
