Following an on-going discussion between The Students’ Union and UWE Bristol, regarding the cost of laundry services on campuses, we are pleased to announce the final proposal* for the new academic year 2020-21, which will see a 65% reduction in laundry costs.
This means that a wash will drop from £2.50 to £1 and a dry from £1.50 to 50p, this will see the overall cost of the cycle reduce from £4 to £1.50.
This is expected to produce an estimated saving of £100,000 for the student community, across our campuses.
Precious Onyenekwu Tatah, President of The Students’ Union, commented: “Over the last seven months myself and other members of The Students’ Union have been lobbying the University to remove or significantly reduce the cost of the laundry service provided on campus.
“As a result of a good working relationship and partnership with the University, I am delighted to confirm that from next academic year (2020/21) the above proposal will take effect. As a champion for the student body, I will continue to ensure that the student voice is heard and students’ experience is continuously improved, our work here is not complete but this is a significant stride forward.
“Many thanks to the University for listening to me and The Students’ Union as a whole, whilst also taking action to ensure that this key area has been reviewed and improved.”
Ubong Joseph Ante, VP Community and Welfare at The Students’ Union, commented: “Many thanks to the University for listening to the student voice and making this significant change in the laundry price.
“Both The Students’ Union and UWE Bristol champion sustainability and work to embed this into all aspects of the student experience. We do encourage students to think about their energy consumption and to make sure that they are maximising every wash. We look forward to welcoming this change from the next academic year.”
*This decision is pending final ratification at the UWE Bristol Board of Governors.
