The new Film Society came back out of the ashes this year and really hit the ground running. Their passion for offering opportunities for their members is really what has made them so successful. They’ve offered consistent and regular activities and have a large membership base. They’ve run multiple fundraising activities collaborating with Mental Health Campaign and hosting their own Oscar’s night which was a huge success.
Runners Up: Debating, SAGUWE
Winners: Bangladeshi
Bangladeshi society really deserve this award due to how dedicated their committee have been and the exceptional commitment from individuals of the society. They have worked really hard to integrate with the local community and held very successful cross-collaborative events with over 10 different societies.
Runners Up: Feminist, Quidditch
Winners: English
English Society have exceeded the previous year. They have rapidly improved in terms of team working, dedication and commitment to providing valuable opportunities for the society. They have run numerous events to benefit their members including guest speakers and a Great Gatsby English Ball and the introduction of an online Cellar Door magazine has given their members many more opportunities to get involved in compared to the previous year.

Winners: SAGUWE
SAGUWE have really excelled at providing lots of opportunities to attract new members to the society. They are hugely inclusive in nature and took on great responsibility to host a national event this year to attract more members. Fresher’s was a hugely successful time for the society where they put on lots of different opportunities for new members to get involved in and have a high number of active members of the society.
Runners Up: Drama - Schools Volunteering, Macmillan - Bag Pack
Winners: MedSoc and Space Exploration - Teddy Goes To Space
MedSoc & Space Exploration collaboratively gained funding from the Better Together Fund to fund this incredible project. The two societies have worked incredibly well together to go out in to Hospitals and work with children to design their own rockets. The rockets were then launched with the children’s teddy’s or toys, filmed and then shared with the children. This is truly inspiring project which will hopefully continue in to next year.
Runners Up: Geography - Pub Quiz, Film - Oscars Night
Winners: Cancer Research UK - Ready, Set, Cure!
This event involoved 24 hours of gaming to raise money for charity. The organisation of the committee members was seamless considering the challenge of hosting 8 different societies all running different activities and games. The event successfully raised over £1,000 for charity and the legacy of this event is looking hugely promising to get even bigger and better year on year.
Runners Up: Mental Health Campaign - Time to Change, Friends of Palestine - Boycott, Divestments and Sanctions
Winners: Islamic - Charity Week
Islamic Society have really set the standard for running campaigns at UWE. The society hosted a week of activities for Islamic Relief. The week saw a whole range of activities including a bake sale on campus, charity collections in the local community and a regional charity dinner attended by the mayor. The events hosted were unique and hugely successful with their aim to raise awareness.
Runners Up: SAGUWE - National Rally, Airsoft - National Championships
Winners: Entrepreneurs - TEDx
TedX was an incredible event hosted within the Students’ Union. The event had over 500 people on the waiting list and really put UWE on the map. The speakers were truly inspiring and everything came together perfectly on the day. The organisation was truly impressive and the team transformed the Students’ Union to reflect a hugely prestigious event.
Runners Up: Drama - Edinburgh Fringe, Comic Book, Anime, Board Games - MCM
Winners: Christian Union - Winter Break
This trip was extremely well organised. The winter break was a great opportunity to offer to their members and had a huge turnout. The trip included multiple activities for members to engage in and really triumphed any other trip organised this year.
Runners Up: Vietnamese - TET, Malaysian and Hindu - Diwali
Winners: Bangladeshi Society - Mother Language Day
Bangladeshi society’s mother language day was a new and unique event this year to raise awareness for their mother language. It was a great collaboration amongst societies and the local community. The event saw a mixture of cultures come together to showcase their unique identities.

This is a great time to win this award with the Bristol 2015 year and it doesn’t stop here – lots of societies have really embraced sustainability this year and we are excited to see societies take it on even more next year.

The marketing society committee this year have worked extremely hard and their team working and delegating has been exceptional. They have led some great events for their members and each and every one of them have held very strong leadership roles within the committee. They have been extremely quick to volunteer to get involved in different projects with the University and the Students’ Union and their willingness to go above and beyond has really stood out this year.

Winners: Graham Ball
Graham is VP of Psychology Society and known by the staff at the SU as the ‘everything man’. He is one of those people who quietly supports the running of the society and ensures he is doing everything he possibly can to support and work with others to get the greatest outcome. He gets involved in every opportunity possible and never hesitates to volunteer to take on a role. He has led some great campaigns and events this year and is a true example of an effective committee member.

Winners: Farhana Kabir
As President of her society Farhana has led on implementing Cellar Door, an online magazine, which has given her members incredible opportunities to practice and showcase their writing skills. She has really ensured that English Society have a strong legacy to continue on next year.

Islamic Society have really been outstanding this year. They have raised over £3000 for charity just this year, run a volunteering project to work with the homeless, held weekly guest speaker events, a very successful Eid dinner, made really strong links this year with the University and the local community and had over 70 people attend their AGM which is outstanding. They had lots of nominations for this award and this award is rightly awarded to a very strong, hardworking, talented and truly dedicated society.
