As the 23/24 year came to a close, let's reflect on the incredible achievements of our previous Presidential team. Here are the top three 'wins' for each of them throughout the year:

President: Kolawole Samuel Olure

• "Transitioning into the Workforce": Sam ran an Employability event that was a resounding success. The event had speakers from various departments from both The Students’ Union and UWE, offering invaluable professional advice to students on securing jobs during and after university. The event also included an interactive Q&A session, where students had the opportunity to ask speakers questions directly and gain insights into their career paths. A job fair was hosted during the event, where employers from diverse industries provided students with insights and opportunities to join their teams. The presence of the UWE Alumni Team and Immigration Advisors added further value to the event, offering guidance and support to students navigating their career paths.

• Instagram Live with Students’ Union Advice Centre: Navigating Accommodation and Knowing Your Rights. Our President held a captivating Instagram Live session with Sue from our Advice Team at The Students’ Union. The discussion focused on accommodation related topics, covering how to navigate living arrangements and understanding your rights as a student. The session provided practical advice and insights to help students make informed decisions about their accommodations.

• Partnership with UWE Stakeholders: Sam collaborated with UWE Bristol to develop flexible payment plans, creating an open dialogue and enhancing services and support for the university community.

VP Community and Welfare: Fayaz Kareem

• Mental Health and Wellbeing Festival: During the first week of December, Fayaz organised a five-day event focused on mental health and wellbeing. The aim was to give students and staff the opportunity to engage in activities that positively impacted their personal wellbeing. Activities included writing on gratitude canvases, enjoying free herbal tea, participating in crafts, and interacting with stallholders at the fair.

• Wonkhe Tour: As part of the Wonkhe study tour, Fayaz visited Students’ Unions and universities in the Baltic regions, including Latvia, Estonia, and Finland. The primary objective was to gain insights into best practices, build connections with European Students’ Unions and related organisations, and explore opportunities for collaboration on joint projects. Additionally, the tour aimed to gather exemplary examples of supporting, funding, and coordinating student-led activities, societies, and sports initiatives.

• Student Experience Awards: Fayad had been working on creating this event, combining the Welfare Awards and Student Experience Awards into one ceremony to recognise valuable contributions from staff and students that enhance the overall student experience.

VP Societies and Communication: Bethel Ekaette

• Diversity Day: The event was a successful celebration of every student's culture and identity, promoting unity, inclusivity, and cultural appreciation within our university community. Activities included a henna stall, workshops on microaggression, deaf awareness, autism awareness, and a variety of foods representing Ukraine, Wales, Nigeria, India, and Bangladesh.

• Amplify: Working alongside the Centre for Music, Bethel facilitated this incredible event. Amplify aims to offer a platform for underrepresented students who are passionate about music to share their songs and stories with peers and staff. It not only highlights the talent and diversity within our student community but also promotes meaningful connections and dialogue across different cultural backgrounds.

• Societies Awards: Bethel was very enthusiastic about organising the Societies Awards. Many students participated enthusiastically to honour each society, and some of them were awarded for their outstanding contributions and achievements. The event was very successful, with a large attendance of enthusiastic students.

VP Sports and Health: Krishna Singh

• Varsity: Krishna actively contributed to enhancing the sports and recreational offerings at UWE Bristol, particularly by collaborating on organising the Varsity competition with the University of South Wales, tentatively set for 20 March. He managed to compile a comprehensive list of sports clubs interested in participating this year, ensuring diverse and competitive representation.

• MOVE: Krishna promoted the MOVE Membership extensively to students across various communication channels, encouraging greater participation in health and fitness activities. Krishna was advocating for the establishment of a new basketball court at the Astro pitch, which would provide students with an additional recreational space.

• Goodie Bags Giveaway: As part of his manifesto commitment to support UWE sports students, he initiated a giveaway initiative during busy BUCS Wednesdays. Krishna distributed 150 bags, each containing a banana, a protein bar, and electrolyte tablets. The first two weeks of giveaways were highly successful and well-received by students, bringing happiness to them.
