2023/24 G&E Society aims to create a community of students with an interest in geography and the environment and provide members with different events and opportunities, both academic and social.
Welcome to the UWE Geography and Environment Society page! Our aim as a society is to create a community including both DGEM students and other students with an interest in geography and the environment to create friendships and connect like-minded students. We are aiming to provide society members with new and exciting events, fun trips and development opportunities to get the most out of your time, both academically and socially.
If you have any questions feel free to drop us a message via email, Facebook, or Instagram.

This year we are planning to run socials and activities throughout the year.
We believe that taking time from our studies is important, so we want to organise different events and activities throughout the academic year. We will run the society as a ‘hybrid’ society as we are experienced both on and offline, making use of teams if needed. All are welcome!
Some of the social events that we are likely to run include:
Meet-ups – We aim to meet fortnightly for different social events and activities or just to have a pint at the SU!
Trips – This year we hope to run fun trips within the society to places like the Eden Project.
Nights out – Don't worry, we're professionals at this one. Whether you're new to Bristol or a seasoned pro in the city we hope to organise a wide range of socials throughout the year at a range of Bristol's venues.
Pub Quizzes – We are continuing with our renowned pub quizzes featuring staff members from the geography and environment department!
Debate Club – We are currently planning to run a debate club where we will have discussions based on environmental issues and sustainability. We hope to raise awareness to students outside of geography and environment about key world issues.
Talks and external speakers – We aim to host talks around geographical and environmental topics from both UWE staff members and external speakers. This was a success last year with many different external speakers and we even hosted our own panel discussion with organisations such as The Converging World, OHES, and the Hydrographic Office.
Community garden sessions – At the university we have a community garden and as part of the society we will use the space for some of our meet-ups as well as collaborate with UWE’s Green Team to learn and relax!
End of Year Event – At the end of the academic year as a society we will host an event where we have one last big get-together at the end of the year to celebrate.
As a society we take part in the Greener Futures Awards and we are proud to say that our society won this award in the academic year (2020/21). The greener future awards is a campaign that societies can take part in through many sustainable activities. It is a way of rewarding and getting recognition for being a sustainable society. The prize for winning is funding for the society. More can be found here about the award.
The Geography and Environment society aim to provide different opportunities to society members some of which can also be used as CV builders:
Beeline ambassadors - We are teaming up with UWE Grounds Team to facilitate voluntary roles to students where they can hold an integral position within the Beeline project. This will involve maintaining the beeline as well as having the opportunity to teach communities outside of UWE about the importance of the plants and pollinators that reside on campus.
Educational Development – We aim to provide different workshops to learn about and how to use different types of equipment and software. Some examples of these workshops are learning about and flying UAV’s and prototyping environmental sensors with Arduino.
