Did you know UWE's Frenchay campus is a Hedgehog Friendly Campus? The university has been recognised by the British Hedgehog Preservation society for its efforts to provide a sanctuary for wild hedgehogs on its Frenchay campus.
For the 2021/22 academic year the university received a gold accreditation for its work!
Hedgehogs are officially listed as 'Vulnerable to Extinction' in Britain, but here's what the UWE team have been doing to change that:
But we also need your help to fight biodiversity loss. The humble hedgehog has declined by up to 50% in the last 20 years. You can read about how to help hedgehogs here. This includes creating a wildlife sanctuary in the corner of your garden for them, and using fewer pesticides.
Spend some time learning about hedgehogs on this fact sheet.
You can also arrange your own litter pick (with other students or friends, with staff members, or with your society or sports club) we have all the litter pick equipment for you to borrow from The Students’ Union Reception (Frenchay, Union 1). Just pop in and ask or email thegreenteam@uwe.ac.uk to let us know if you’d like to borrow it!
A group of students have taken on the role of Hedgehog Friendly Ambassador to support hedgehogs on campus and in their local communities. They've played an important part in helping UWE gain its Silver Hedgehog Friendly accreditation by working with the Grounds team! If this is something you're interested in getting involved with, please email thegreenteam@uwe.ac.uk
