5 reasons why you should stand in The Leadership Race

Jamie Jordon, VP Education

The Leadership Race is already upon us, where we will elect the next generation of student leaders. We have a variety of roles to go for, from one of the five full-time Presidents, to one of the many part-time roles. Regardless of the role you choose to go for, holding such a position can bring about many positive changes, both at UWE and for yourself. Here are some reasons why you should put yourself forward.

You have the ability to drive change

You set the direction of The Students’ Union, so have the ability to drive change. The power is in your hands. If you don’t like how something is done, work to change it.

You’ll learn a lot from the election alone

Regardless of whether you win or not, standing in an election can be a learning curve. You’ll have to put yourself out there, speak to multiple people, be filmed on camera and a lot more.

You’ll be involved in wider University matters

The Presidents sit on a variety of University committees and meet with the most senior staff. It provides a valuable insight into how the University is ran, and the Higher Education sector as a whole. The knowledge and experience is invaluable.

You will interact with a range of people

Through the role, you’ll meet a variety of people from so many different backgrounds. You’ll meet people from all over the world and form new friendships. Seeing so many different views and perspective changes how you see things.

You’ll gain so many skills

Taking on a leadership role comes with a lot of responsibility, so you’ll naturally learn a lot. The Presidents are all trustees and directors of The Students’ Union, so have responsibility for budgets and the financial wellbeing of the organisation. There’s a range of other qualities that you will pick up from influencing, negotiation, organisation, public speaking and loads more.

So what are you waiting for? Nominations are now open and close on Friday 16 February.
