With the worsening cost of living crisis and the start of term imminent, The Students’ Union at UWE have created a range of support options that go beyond signposting to support projects, across all campuses for both staff and students. These cover food, clothing, transport and period products.
We are acutely aware that this will not provide support for all students, however, we hope it will give us an opportunity to understand the largest areas of need, which will inform more targeted work as we move through the year.
Come along to The Students’ Union Café at your campus site for a free hot meal, on the days and times are listed below. This is open to students and staff and is run on a first come, first served basis. We strongly encourage you to please bring your own Tupperware as you might wish to take this meal away to freeze, eat for dinner or lunch the next day.
Come along on to The Students' Union at UWE, Lower Engagement Space Union 1, U block, Frenchay Campus with your reusable cup and help yourself to tea, coffee and decaf hot drinks.
This provision is open in line with the welcome desk openings.
The Community Larders at Frenchay, Glenside and Bower Ashton Students' Unions have been set up to support students with free long life food and home goods.
They are accessible during each of The Students' Union site opening hours and are restocked weekly.
We will enhance our existing swap shop and look to embed as a core element of the new UWE Bristol Eco Hub. Swap Shops are free community events where students and staff can bring their pre-loved clothes and/or books and trade them for items that catch their eye.
Our first Swap Shop event of the year was held at The Students' Union at UWE, Union 1, Frenchay on Friday 22 September 12:00-14:30. Please find the event here - WELCOME 2023: Frenchay Clothes and Book Swap (thestudentsunion.co.uk)
Here at The Students' Union, we understand how expensive placements can be. The price of uniforms, parking, accommodation and enough coffee to get you through your shift - it all adds up! That's why we've developed the Placement Uniform Swap Shop, to give our healthcare students a more budget-friendly, eco-friendly placement experience.
This will run on a Wednesday, 12:00–14:00, from Wednesday 6 September in The Students’ Union at Glensdie until the Winter Break.
More information can be found here.
Emergency clothing supplies
Where urgent support on clothing is required, we will work with our support services to provide basic packages to members. Please contact The Students’ Union President, if you are in this position. SUPresident@uwe.ac.uk

We will support students with sustainable transportation and are offering our current Bike Loan Scheme to students for free (only requiring the £50 refundable deposit)

We are working with UWE Bristol to supply more toilets across the campus sites where plastic free single-use period products will be available if you are caught short.
From the 16 October we will be running a weekly stall at Frenchay, Bower and Glenside campus sites for you to collect natracare (plastic free) single use products. For those at Spike Island and Arnolfini campuses' period products can be found in selected toilets. If you have any feedback on our period stalls please send it to email@example.com
We will also be giving you the opportunity to sign up to a free sustainable period product trial.
