This Anti Sexual Violence Awareness Week (2nd February - 9th February 2026), we talked to students about spotting the red and green flags in relationships.
This year, our focus was on the importance of healthy relationships and the ability to spot the red and green flags in your own romantic and platonic relationships. Throughout the week, the SU community team offered a range of activities over all 3 campuses including tealight painting and bracelet making in addition to a Anti Sexual Violence Awareness stall, where students were invited to play a ‘green flag bingo’ and label what they thought were positive and healthy behaviours in relationships, the bingo included behaviours such as:
Celebrating your successes
Ghosting you after an argument
Controlling what you wear
Respecting when you say no
Students were also asked to leave their own relationship ‘red’ and ‘green’ flags, with green flags such as:
Likes cats
Makes you a cuppa
Goes to therapy
and red flags such as :
Parents still clean their room
Makes you watch them play video games
Won’t clip their toenails
In exchange for taking part in our bingo, consent themed freebies were on offer, including temporary tattoos, tote bags, mugs and carabiners! Information from internal and external support services was also offered for any students needing further support on the topics discussed.
At our tealight painting and bracelet making events, we asked students to consider ‘'What does it mean to be a woman in today's society?’ and ‘What can men do to help women feel and be safe?’ to start a dialogue and give students a space to express their feelings and opinions as they crafted.
We spoke to almost 200 students about Anti Sexual Violence Awareness Week and received some amazing responses, highlighting the importance of openly discussing the topics at hand.
Some quotes from participants :
"This has given me an excuse to talk to my 17 year old son about this."
"I think this is something we need to talk about more,"
"Do you guys do this stall often? It’s a really good idea."
"We never talk about this where I'm from."
“There was some really great information here.”
The Students' Union at UWE and UWE Bristol recognise it can be difficult to recognise red flags or negative behaviours in relationships and have created some videos outlining some of the ways abuse may start or manifest in a relationship, as well as another on what you can do if one of your friend is in an unhealthy relationship.
The Students' Union at UWE and UWE Bristol work with local organisations and UWE's Anti-Sexual Violence Service to inform our work on sexual violence. We are also part of the city wide 'We're Here' campaign that aims to ensure survivors know where to find expert care and support.
